‘Show but do not tell.’ A short but significant sentence for me as a filmmaker and photographer, as I am constantly aware of context, perspective and assumption as they are all intertwined within that significant sentence. An important aspect to achieve this goal is my research in how a story can be told. While writers are often purely textual in their narratives, an artist compels to express himself beyond the limits of text and language. There are infinite ways to depict a story and a single image as a painting or photograph can already have a major narrative significance. In the ongoing project ‘Show but do not tell’ I combine images and sometimes text to shift the viewers attention and focus rather on the interaction of colours and forms. As Hannes Wallrafen once put it; ‘a graphic designer who not uses a pencil but photography.’ Capturing these graphics, which are almost always made in everyday life, are sometimes created by staging the image or achieved by accident. These accidents are not uncommon and sometimes the combinations are pure coincidence. ‘Show but do not tell’ keeps me to have a critical view on storytelling and continue to amaze me. It leads to new discoveries in how our context/background influences in what we (want to) see . The website covers a small selection of work from my portfolio.
